Welcome to the
Nokomis Cultural Heritage Center!
The Nokomis Cultural Heritage Center is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, founded in 1988 originally as the Nokomis Learning Center, with the purpose of teaching the history, culture, and the language of the Three Fires of the Anishinaabe.
The Three Fires Confederacy is a historic alliance between the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi peoples, all of which belong to the larger Anishinaabe cultural group of the Great Lakes Region. Michigan is home to 12 federally recognized tribes and many more state-recognized tribes.
Nokomis is the Anishinaabemowin word for “my grandmother.”
